Crankypants Rod Watson won't let Bills fans enjoy their week

As you undoubtedly know by now, the Buffalo Bills are a playoff team for the first time since I reached puberty. Doug Flutie still won't be their quarterback for their showdown in Jacksonville, but another quarterback who's a slightly undersized dual threat will be under center so it's all okay. Since the last time the Bills played beyond Week 17, we've lived through eight  Fast and Furious  movies, four presidencies, the deaths of Robin Williams, short airport waits, AIM, and Osama bin laden, the entirety of Arnold Schwarzenegger's political career, and the releases of 25 different variations of Pepsi. The fact that no Bills playoff games occurred in the same span that featured two separate TV shows starring Kevin James and Leah Remini is something to marvel at. But Buffalo News columnist Rod Watson is not amazed. Or amused. Or even apathetic. In fact, he's downright angry . At the inevitable watch parties, we should use halftime for mass therapy se...

Welcome to Pegulaville

Three years ago today, the Buffalo Bills were sold to Terry and Kim Pegula.  To commemorate the third anniversary of the sale, please enjoy this piece I wrote on October 14, 2014 to express my feelings about it. ********************************************** My entire life, I have been told many things; there is such a thing as too much chocolate in your chocolate milk, you can’t wear gym shorts when it’s cold outside, and that the Buffalo Bills would skip town before I died. Using half a container of Nesquik in one sitting was the norm, and comfort always trumped cold, but it was almost a foregone conclusion in my mind and in just about everyone else’s that the Bills would leave to go to a more popular market like Los Angeles. When Ralph Wilson passed away in March, those fears were amplified. The uncertainty of not knowing how much longer they’d be around was a constant point of worry. Then, after months o...

Response to Trump's speech demonstrated NFL's unwillingness to deal with concussions

Donald Trump’s speech at a rally for Luther Strange on Friday has garnered plenty of attention because of his comments directed at athletes who do not stand for “The Star-Spangled Banner.” However, his diatribe against players who sit or kneel for the national anthem has completely overshadowed another radical stance he took when he said that the game has become too soft because of rule changes that were enacted to protect players from head injuries. By now we have all heard that the repetitive hits to the head that accompany football can be life-threatening. The day before Trump’s speech, the family of Aaron Hernandez announced they would be suing the NFL after evidence of “the most severe case [of CTE] they had ever seen for someone of Aaron’s age” was found by researchers at the CTE Center at Boston University. Hernandez hanged himself in his cell in April after being sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Odin Lloyd and after standing trial for a double homicide ...
